Distinguished Representatives from Three Levels of the Canadian Government,
All guests and friends,
Good evening! I’m glad to be here for this Chinese New Year celebration and award gala hosted by the Canadian Youth Association and the Canadian Multicultural Media Confederation (CMMC). First of all, I would like to extend, on behalf of the Chinese Consulate General in Toronto, my sincere season’s greetings to all you present here, and also my warm congratulations to the recipients of the media awards.
For a long time, the media has served as the irreplaceable window and platform for us to get information about the world, and promote connection and understanding between peoples. Its influence is growing day by day, from newspapers, radio and TV to online media and to the We-Media like Facebook, Twitter, Wechat and TikTok, which we follow and contact with each other every day.
It should be noted that the media and public opinion always exert certain influence on the formulation and implementation of foreign policies. As a diplomat, my mission here is to build a bridge of communication between our two countries and peoples, and to pass on the friendship of the Chinese people to the Canadian people. Similarly, in the bilateral relations of two countries, the media is also an important link for the peoples to exchange ideas and deepen mutual understanding and relationship.
At present, the difficulties and obstacles facing the China-Canada relations mainly lie in the fact that some people in Canada, out of ideological prejudice and bias, lack the correct knowledge and understanding of China and are unwilling to view China’s development and changes in an objective and rational way. This kind of understanding gap originates first from the gap of information and communication, which calls for responsible media to play a responsible role, so as to create an open, inclusive, objective and rational environment for the public opinion.
In its essence, the relationship between China and Canada is substantial and multidimensional. It should not be viewed in a simplistic, one-sided or even emotional way. I sincerely hope that friends from the media present here will look at and report the China-Canada relations from an objective and comprehensive perspective, actively support the continuous improvement of our bilateral relations, and play a constructive role in enhancing mutual understanding and building consensus and trust.
Since its establishment, CMMC has provided an important platform for the local Chinese media and media of other ethnic groups to communicate, learn from each other and deepen cooperation. It has also promoted mutual understanding between the Chinese community and other ethnic communities, which is conducive to Canada’s multicultural society and also a better understanding of China. In the future, it is hoped that CMMC will stay true to its original aspiration and make continuous efforts to achieve greater success.
Lastly, I sincerely wish you all good health and prosperity in the Year of the rabbit. Thanks!
